'Ultra-Breit' Borneo Short
Tail
Pythons Python breitensteini
The 2004 - 2005 breeding
season first produced some VPI line Borneo Short-Tail 'Ultra-Breit'
offspring in our collection. Our
adult female deposited 21 viable eggs on 05/06/05. On 07/06/05
the clutch began to hatch. Ultimately, all 21 eggs hatched and of
those, 8 were visually different right from the start, exhibiting the
'Ultra-Breit' trait. Simply put, these animals look amazing in
person. The 2005 - 2006 breeding season again produced some
WILD looking babies! A clutch of 29 viable eggs was deposited on
04/19/06. On 06/22/06 the clutch began to hatch. Out of 29
eggs, there were 25 babies (4 dead in egg). Of the 25, 4 are
incredible examples of the 'Ultra-Breit' trait and the other 21 are
very nice looking offspring. The exact nature of the gene
passing
to offspring and its expression is still debatable. It is believed at this time that
the
'Ultra-Breit' trait may pass similar to that of an Ivory Blood Python
or
Yellow-Belly
Ball Python. Genetic co-dominance is
where the ‘Ultra-Breit’ is the ‘Super’
form, some of the siblings are visual hets for the ‘Super’ form and
other
siblings are completely normal. There is
disagreement whether hets can be visually distinguished from normals
and what
traits exactly constitute a visual het.
We have begun to classify and hold back non 'Ultra-Breit' offspring
based on visual markers we feel are indicative of animals to be 'Visual
Het' (share all the markers the parents have), 'Possible Visual Het' (share some, but not all the
markers the parents have)
and 'Normal' (do not
share the markers the parents have). As far as I know, two
Ultra-Breits have not been bred together, so it is
unknown if an even more extreme visual example of Borneo
offspring is possible.
The Short-Tail genetic 'morph' market is
still VERY small compared to other markets (ex. Ball Pythons) and this
is an exciting project for us to be working with.
